Healthy Snacks For Families On The Go

Now that we’re heading into the busy holiday season, many families are making travel plans to spend quality time with their loved ones. Your friendly team here at your Manoa HI children’s dentistry practice would like to share a few healthy snack ideas that are perfect for traveling. Whether you’ll be traveling by plane, train or automobile, these healthy & simple snacks are easy to store and take along with you on your holiday journeys.

Trail Mix

People of all ages love trail mix and not just hikers! But instead of buying trail mix at the store that’s loaded with sugar and salt, just make your own healthier version at home. Just fill a large plastic container with all your favorites like Cheerios, popcorn, seeds, pretzels, dried fruits and nuts.

Apple Slices with Peanut Butter

A tasty and healthy snack that’s perfect for traveling is slices of apple topped with natural peanut butter. To prevent the sliced apple from oxidizing and turning brown, add some lemon juice to the cut apples. Or, you could wait and slice the apples when you’re ready to snack. Just top each apple slice with a dab of your favorite natural peanut butter for a quick snack that’s loaded with goodness like protein and immune-boosting Vitamin C.

Fresh Veggies and Hummus Dip

Vegetables like carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower and bell peppers can be chopped up before your trip and put into a cooler. Then either make your own hummus or buy it pre-made and take a container along with you. Hummus is a Middle Eastern dip made with chickpeas and sesame that only has 1.5 grams of fat per tablespoon which is far less than other dips.

Ants on a Log

This classic American snack never goes out of style! Just cut small sticks of celery to make the logs, then fill the indentations with almond butter. Then put some dried cranberries or raisins (the ants) on top. Kids think it’s fun eating this snack and it provides loads of protein and fiber.

Banana, Almond Butter and Honey Sandwiches

These sandwiches travel well and they’re delicious too! Just spread some almond butter on two slices of whole-grain bread and top with banana slices and a drizzle of honey. Cut the sandwiches in half and store in a ziplock bag.
