General Treatment

At Pediatric Dentistry Kahala, Dr. Hirai and his friendly team have the training, expertise and experience needed to provide the highest level of dental care to children. Your child’s good dental health is just as important to us as it is to you! We demonstrate this commitment by offering caring, patient-focused dental care in a comfortable and kid-friendly environment while keeping the parents involved with every aspect of their children’s dental care.

What to Expect at Your Child’s Regular Appointments

When your child visits our Manoa HI children’s dentistry practice for a regular appointment, Dr. Hirai will carefully and gently examine your child’s teeth, oral tissues and jaw. X-rays will be taken (when necessary, usually at every other appointment) to see what is occurring under the gum tissue with any teeth which have yet to come in.

We will clean your child’s teeth to remove plaque and debris that can cause tooth decay and gum problems. During the time your child spends with us, we will stress the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene at home using easy-to-understand language. Most children leave our office highly motivated to take responsibility for their oral health by doing a great job of regularly brushing and flossing their teeth.

Preventative Care Options

Prevention is at the core of all we do at Pediatric Dentistry Kahala. Keeping your child’s teeth strong and healthy requires preventative measures, and the routine examinations and regular cleanings your child receives are a part of this preventative care.

Depending on your child’s age, oral health and risk factors, Dr. Hirai may recommend in-office preventative treatments which may include fluoride supplements and tooth sealants which are both designed to protect the teeth from decay.

Fluoride Supplements: Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that is present in all water sources. Often dubbed “Nature’s own cavity-fighter”, fluoride is effective in preventing and reversing the early signs of tooth decay. It works by making the structure of teeth stronger so they’re more resistant to acid attacks that lead to tooth decay. We can provide fluoride supplements if we determine that your child could benefit from more cavity-fighting fluoride.

Dental Sealants: A dental sealant is a protective barrier that is placed on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth which are more prone to cavities. This resin material seals the tiny grooves and depressions that are on the chewing surfaces of the teeth to protect the teeth from decay. While dental sealants can last many years once they’re applied, we will check them whenever your child visits us to ensure they’re not chipped or worn away.

Importance of Regular Dental Visits

In order to ensure that your child can enjoy all the benefits that come with good oral health, it’s critical that your child visits our office regularly for routine examinations and professional cleanings. At these important visits that should take place every six months, we will examine your child’s teeth and gums and look for any problems that may be developing. If a problem is detected, we can provide your child with the necessary treatment before the problem becomes more difficult and costly to treat.
